Why Timing Can Change the Equation

Sex hormones play a direct role in closing growth plates — the areas of developing bone in young animals. In large and giant dog breeds, early removal of these hormones has been associated in some studies with increased rates of certain orthopedic conditions, including hip dysplasia and cranial cruciate ligament injuries.

For small dogs and cats, early spay/neuter (around five to six months) remains broadly considered safe by most veterinary organizations.
