What Are Macronutrients?

Every food you eat is made up of nutrients — compounds your body extracts and uses to function. Nutrition science divides these into two broad categories: macronutrients and micronutrients.

Macronutrients are the nutrients your body requires in large (macro) quantities. There are three: carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Each provides calories — the unit of energy your body runs on. Fat-soluble vitamins

Of the 20 amino acids, nine are considered essential — meaning your body cannot make them and must obtain them from food.
