Why a Seasonal Lawn Calendar Works
Most lawn problems — thin patches, weeds, disease — trace back to tasks done at the wrong time. Fertilizing too early, aerating too late, or mowing too short during a drought all create stress that compounds across months. A calendar-based approach aligns your care routine with the biological rhythms of grass, so each action supports the next.
This reference is organized by season rather than strict calendar month, because climate varies significantly across the U.S. Use soil temperature as your most reliable cue: cool-season grasses (like fescue and bluegrass) are most active when soil temperatures run between 50°F and 65°F. Warm-season grasses (like bermuda and zoysia) thrive when soil temperatures climb above 65°F. A basic soil thermometer, inserted 2–4 inches deep, tells you more than the date ever will.

Month-by-Month Task Reference
Late Winter (February – Early March)
Resist the urge to do too much. Soil is often still frozen or saturated. Use this window to sharpen mower blades, service equipment, and test your soil pH if you haven't in the past two to three years. A soil pH test guides everything from fertilizer selection to overseeding success.
Spring (March – May)
This is the busiest and most consequential window for cool-season lawns. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide before soil temperatures reach 55°F to block crabgrass germination. Mow as soon as the grass begins active growth, keeping cool-season grasses at 3–4 inches. Avoid heavy fertilizing this early for cool-season types — a light application of slow-release nitrogen is appropriate, but heavy feeding now promotes excessive shoot growth at the expense of root development.
Warm-season lawns are still dormant. Hold off on any feeding until green-up is well underway.

Early Summer (June)
Warm-season lawns hit peak growth; fertilize with a balanced or nitrogen-forward product. Cool-season lawns begin heat stress — raise your mowing height by half an inch and reduce fertilizer. Never remove more than one-third of the blade in a single mow.
Watering in Summer: Timing Matters
Morning watering — ideally before 10 a.m. — allows moisture to reach roots before peak evaporation, while giving blades time to dry before nightfall. Wet grass left overnight is more vulnerable to fungal diseases such as brown patch and dollar spot. If your schedule only permits evening watering, water as close to dusk as possible to limit prolonged blade wetness.
Mid-to-Late Summer (July – August)
The most stressful months for cool-season grasses. Water deeply and infrequently — roughly one inch per week — early in the morning to reduce evaporation and fungal risk. Avoid fertilizing cool-season lawns during this window. Warm-season grasses can receive a second fertilizer application in mid-summer.
Fall (September – November)
The single most important season for cool-season lawns. Aerate compacted soil in early fall, overseed thin areas, and apply your primary fertilizer application — a higher-potassium blend supports root development heading into winter. Keep mowing until growth stops, then do a final cut at a slightly shorter height (around 2.5 inches) to reduce snow mold risk.

Early Winter (December – January)
Lawn care is minimal. Stay off frozen or dormant grass to avoid compaction and crown damage. Store fertilizers and herbicides in a dry, temperature-stable location. Plan any drainage or grading projects now so you're ready when the ground thaws.
Pre-emergent herbicide
A weed control product applied to soil before weed seeds germinate. It works by preventing seedling root development, so timing relative to soil temperature is critical — applying it after germination has begun renders it ineffective.
Aeration
The process of perforating soil with small holes to reduce compaction, improve water infiltration, and allow air and nutrients to reach grass roots. Core aeration, which removes small plugs of soil, is generally more effective than spike aeration.
Overseeding
Spreading grass seed over an existing lawn without tearing it up. Used to thicken thin areas, introduce improved grass varieties, or fill in bare patches after summer stress.
Soil pH
A measure of how acidic or alkaline your soil is, on a scale from 0 to 14. Most lawn grasses prefer a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Soil that is too acidic or alkaline prevents grass from absorbing nutrients effectively, even when fertilizer is applied.
Slow-release nitrogen
A fertilizer formulation that releases nitrogen gradually over weeks or months, reducing the risk of rapid excessive growth or fertilizer burn. Preferred over quick-release formulas for most residential lawn applications.
Dormancy
A natural period of reduced or halted growth that grass enters in response to temperature extremes — either winter cold or summer heat. Dormant grass may appear brown but is typically still alive and will recover when conditions improve.
